Welcome to the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, Fifth District Northern Region's Marine Safety and Environmental Protection web page.  Our purpose is to provide our members with the information they need to familiarize themselves with, and participate in, the program.

MISSION STATEMENT

“We are the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s core team of specialists in Marine Safety and Environmental Protection.  Our principal Mission is to support the marine safety and environmental protection programs and activities of the United States Coast Guard and to train and support members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary who join us.

2003 provided the Marine Safety and Environmental Protection M branch with a clearly endorsed and definitive program with an Auxiliary work force poised to take advantage of the new opportunities that lay before us.

Moving ahead to 2008 and beyond, the potential significance of the Auxiliary’s involvement with SECTOR DELAWARE BAY and its sub units has increased dramatically.

By training and qualifying for the approved programs, we are able to have a direct impact on the number of missions the Coast Guard is able to perform and add to our value as members of Team Coast Guard.

Of the eleven approved programs, we are currently training three:

AUX-AEI         Port State Control Boarding Team Assistant

AUX-MEES     Marine Environmental Education Specialist

AUX- MSW     Marine Safety Watchstander

These are needs based qualifications with potential to grow and change as the CG force recognizes its manpower shortages.

The PQS requirements and sign off workbooks can be found on www.auxetrain.org/tridenttext.html, about halfway down the page.  You will notice that each PQS has its own prerequisites.  The Good Mate Manual and test, as well as Introduction to Marine Safety and Environmental Protection and test, are also located on the site so you have access to the information you will need.  Auxiliarists must meet the same minimum requirements as are required of an active or reserve CG member and must be physically able to accomplish the training and perform the tasks required by the PQS.

The website www.auxetrain.org  has a good deal of information on the TRIDENT Program for those who are interested.  Members with an interest in going on to qualify for the TRIDENT should have it brought to the attention of the ADSO-MS TRIDENT Program so that his/her progress may be tracked.

New to the Program is the addition of the Marine Safety Ribbon.  The requirements for the ribbon are the educational building blocks that lead to the TRIDENT award.  Attainment of the ribbon does not mandate that an Auxiliarist continue on beyond that level of expertise.

We are also involved on a local level with many organizations that have an interest in the marine environment and clean water.  The number and scope of our interaction continues to grow.  Clean Marina Programs in the tri-state area need to be promulgated; Delaware River and Bay clean water action groups have a growing need for committee members, as well as those Auxiliarists who support the Area Maritime Security and Area Contingency Plan committees at SEC DEL BAY.

The Coast Guard’s Marine Safety community prides itself on an extremely high level of professionalism.  Auxiliary support to this community must be ready in every way to maintain those high standards, even as volunteers.  With your help we will provide that support.  Our commitment to excellence is second to none.

If you have an interest in the program or know someone who might, please contact your FSO-MS, SO-MS, or another member of the MS/EP Team.  If you know someone outside of the Auxiliary who might be interested, please let them know of our program and have them speak with your FSO-PS or SO-PS.  We can grow our ranks through a targeted recruitment and gain valuable members.  You would be providing a great service to your unit, the Auxiliary and the Coast Guard.
