The Vessel Examiner web pages are intended to communicate with and disseminate information to Auxiliary members.

The Vessel Safety Check Program is intended to serve as a "prevention through education, outreach and volunteer compliance" activity and to help recreational boaters gain a respect for the boating environment as a result of the Vessel Safety Check encounter.

Thus, these pages will reflect the efforts fo the Department of Vessel Examination to promote "Safe Boating" to the boating public.

We hope you will find them interesting and informative.

NEWS FROM NATIONAL

At N-Train this year, 2002, in St. Louis, MO, the VE Department adopted the following initiatives and encourage all examiners to assist:

  • Grow the Auxiliary and the Department by recruiting new and current members into the VE/MV program to reach a goal of 10,000 vessel examiners and 3,000 marine visitors.
  • Every examiner and visitor needs to attract one new person, minimum, into the Auxiliary/program.
  • Get examiners organized in teams at the unit level and down to the waterside on regular schedules, advertised to the boating public.
  • Re-engineer the Marine Dealer Visitor Program in 2002.
  • Communicate news of the program and the Department with internal and external customers.
  • Search for and report (to the DC-V) VSC disincentives where they exist.
  • Establish controlled and effective supply flows at the unit level.
  • Establish a flexible VSC MONTH program for June, 2002, starting with a maximum effort on 1 - 2 June weekend.
  • We will publish the "Auxiliary supplement to the VSC Manual" this year, as a part of the AUXILIARY OPERATIONAL POLICY MANUAL.
  • Develop new literature sources for the MDV counter-top racks.
  • Create a meaningful incentives and awards program.

NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT

District 5NR completed a total of 14448 VSC's in 2001. Our goal for year 2002 is 23712 VSC's. This goal can be accomplished if we all work at it. We can not only have fun doing so but look at the number of boaters we come in contact with and with our knowledge of boating safety, we save not only property but most important - LIVES.

You Ask - How can we do it?

Conduct at least two Division run VSC stations where the Division Team consists of VE's from different Flotillas in the Division. This is in addition to the Flotilla run VSC stations. Don't forget to advertise and have your material well in advance.

All current Vessel Examiners bring in at least one NEW Examiner into our program this year. We also need to retain all of our current examiners. If an examiner is having a problem, work with him/her to make sure they are part of the Flotilla/Division Team.

Give me FIVE days conducting Vessel Safety Checks this year. Doing so will not only increase VSC's conducted but will promote the presence of our Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Requests for VSC's are received at the District level from the National Safety Check Web Site which I forward to the appropriate ADSO/VE for action. If you receive a name, address, phone number, etc. for a person who asks for a VSC, please make contact and conduct the VSC. Since the public has enough interest to not only look at our Web Site, but to request a Safety Check, it is a good chance they could become a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.  And, don't forget to talk to them.

As stated in NEWS FROM NATIONAL, the weekend of 1 and 2 June 2002 is VSC Weekend. If you recall, last year it rained across most of our area on VSC Day, 2 Jun 01. If it looks like bad weather on 1 & 2 Jun 02, or a Division has a problem with this weekend, pick another weekend in June 02 to conduct Vessel Safety Check Weekend. If at all possible, it should be held on 1 & 2 Jun 02.

Look for any new Marinas or Boat Ramps in your area to hold a VSC Station. Also look for any older locations that have never had a VSC Station.

With everyone's help, we can make the 5th Northern District the NUMBER ONE District in our country this year.
