|COMMCOMM Calling, Hurricane Matthew is upon us||10/16/2016|
| That was the call to AUGCOM, AUXMON, and HF stations around the country. While many Auxiliarists
were hunkered down for Hurricane Matthew, Auxiliarists from 5NR and across the country responded to the
call to duty to put additional stations
on the air to monitor for ships in distress.
Auxiliarists from two National based programs, AUGCOM and AUXMON are available to assist COMMCOM (USCG Communications Command). These stations are typically activated to listen for distress signals on the High Frequency (HF) radio bands when called by COMMCOM for specific events like hurricanes and last year the El Faro sinking.
Three 5NR AUXMON stations, 19-2 Rossiter, 19-2 Taylor, and joined with 17 other stations responded to the call up from COMMCOM on Thursday 5 Oct. at 1540hrs EDT until Saturday 7 Oct. at 2300hrs EDT. The team accumulated 365 mission hours monitoring multiple frequencies resulting in two reports to COMMCOM, one distress call and one questionable status of ships at sea.
Any HF stations interested in joining either the AUGCOM or AUXMON programs, see the information on the National site at http://wow.uscgaux.info/content.php?unit=R-DEPT&category=MEMBERSONLY (login is required to access this page) or contact Rick Taylor at email@example.com.
